Just Another Myth

I can say with an almost absolute certainty that I am not the only woman who has ever had this annoying little problem.  Then again, it may go unnoticed to others.  Every once in awhile I’ll look down at my fingernails and notice little white flecks on the nail.  When I used to ask my mother what in the world caused them she would tell me that same thing I’m sure most of you have heard as well.  Its from a lack of calcium, right?  Turns out that’s just another one of those old “wives tales” we hear so much about.

I recently learned that these tiny little imperfections are caused by any sort of trauma done to the base of the nail.  For example, dropping a heavy object (a book, perhaps?) on your nail or slamming your finger in a door.  Not only is it painful at the time, it shows ists ugly face again later as well.  You see, the mark originates underneath the cuticle, but travels along with the nail as it grows longer.  This means that they will eventually go away when you clip your nails.  Until then, they can be hidden with any color nail polish.

To prevent against further damage in the future, apply a strengthening basecoat to your nails both before and after polishing them.  I’m sure no matter how careful you are, something is bound to fall on your fingers or its going to get slammed in a door.  At least now you know that no matter how much milk you drink or how many calcium supplements you try, those marks aren’t going away.  You just have to wait them out and protect your nails from damage.
